Shot by Shot: A Practical Guide to Filmmaking is an introductory textbook on film and digital video production that has been used in over 80 university programs for nearly 20 years. The new, updated 4th Edition has been extensively rewritten. The book is divided into 12 chapters:
- The Moving Image
- The Film Camera and Film Stock
- The Video Camera and Recorder
- The Lens
- Composition
- Continuity
- Editing Theory
- Editing Mechanics
- Pre-production
- Lighting
- Sound
- Distribution
The new, updated 4th Edition has been extensively rewritten. It includes new chapters encompassing HD video cameras and digital video recording, expanded editing chapters and a chapter on new exhibition and distribution opportunities, from film festivals to YouTube.
The two editing chapters (Editing Theory and Editing Mechanics) include digital editing workflows for film, video and hybrid projects. Every chapter has been revised to reflect the realities of 21st-century motion-picture production, whether using super-8 or 16mm film, SD or HD video or some combination of formats.
The 4th edition maintains the readability and easy-to-understand explanations that made the first three editions so popular and widely used. It also retains descriptions of traditional, analog film production methods for those who believe that these methods instill a discipline that serves young filmmakers well, whatever technology they have at their disposal.
